Unease about phone app user privacy

Despite assurances by authorities, there is growing concern among Fijians about the mobile phone app being used to track the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Fiji Civil Society Organisations Alliance, the tool could compromise the privacy of Fijians.

While speaking at a Fiji CSO Alliance news conference in Lautoka, Citizens' Constitutional Forum CEO Louchrisha Hussain said app developers should follow the strictest privacy guidelines to ensure the privacy of Fijians.

"There is a need for active effort to address the pandemic but it is crucial that these tools are limited in use for its purpose and time as well as the individual right to privacy and other freedoms," she said.

"Government also needs to practise transparency in the sense of making it absolutely clear, not just what the careFIJI app is for but how to use the app, what this means specifically with respect to privacy but also how private information will be used and managed and finally, who has access to private user information.

"We strongly urge that any use of such technology must abide by the strictest protections and also be available according to domestic policies that are consistent with international human rights standards."
